What are the Required Dimensions of an ADA Shower Seat?

The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications. The ADA Standards for Accessible Design set the minimum requirements for making facilities accessible to people with disabilities.

Here are the required dimensions for an ADA shower seat according to the ADA Standards for Accessible Design:

  • Width: The shower seat must be at least 15 inches (381 mm) wide.
  • Depth: The shower seat must have a depth of at least 20 inches (508 mm), exclusive of supportive brackets. This means that the shower seat itself, excluding any mounting hardware, needs to be at least 20 inches deep.
  • Height: The shower seat must be mounted on the wall at a height of 17 to 19 inches (432 to 483 mm) above the finished floor surface.

It’s important to note that these are minimum dimensions, and shower seats can be larger to accommodate different user needs. Additionally, the ADA also specifies requirements for the structural strength of the shower seat, requiring that it must have a weight capacity of at least 250 pounds.

All ADA shower seats on ShowerSeats.com meet these dimension requirements and have a weight capacity of up to 400 pounds. Check them out here: ADA Shower Seats
