Are Shower Seats Covered by Medicare?

In general, Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does NOT cover shower seats because they are not typically considered “durable medical equipment” (DME).

What classifies as durable medical equipment (DME)?

  • Durable: Lasting at least three years
  • Used for medical reasons
  • Not primarily used for comfort or convenience

Are there any exceptions where Medicare would pay for a shower seat?

Yes, the exceptions are:

  • Medicare Advantage Plans: Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans offer additional benefits beyond Original Medicare, and some may cover shower seats as part of an over-the-counter (OTC) allowance. You’ll need to check with your specific plan to see if this is the case.
  • Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs): If you are admitted to an SNF for rehabilitation or other care, shower seats are typically provided as needed and covered by Medicare Part A.
  • Medicaid and Other Assistance Programs: Medicaid and some other state and local assistance programs may offer coverage for shower seats, depending on your income and medical needs. It’s worth checking into these options as well.

Remember, it’s always best to consult with your doctor and review your specific Medicare or insurance plan coverage to determine if a shower seat or other safety device is covered and what options are available to you.
