Are Shower Seats and Shower Benches the Same Thing?

Yes, the terms “shower seat” and “shower bench” are often used interchangeably and they typically refer to the same type of bathroom safety fixture. Sometimes, folks can be referring to slight differences between the two, which we’ve outlined below.

What is a shower seat?

  • Shower seats are generally smaller and simpler: Typically just a flat surface to sit on, without a back or armrests.
  • They can be freestanding or wall-mounted: Freestanding shower seats offer more flexibility, while wall-mounted ones save space and can fold up for easier access.
  • Shower seats are commonly used for basic needs: Sitting while showering, shaving legs, etc.

What is a shower bench?

  • Shower benches may be larger and more elaborate: Often features a back and/or armrests for added comfort and support.
  • They are usually wall-mounted: Offers a more permanent and integrated feel within the shower design.
  • Shower benches are suitable for extended use: Relaxing in the shower, reading a book, etc.

So, while there can be some slight variations, most shower seats and shower benches can be considered the same thing within the context of providing a place to sit and additional safety support in the shower. Generally, the term “shower seat” vs. “shower bench” is based on personal preference and/or manufacturer marketing.
